Dr. Ingmar Weber
Founding director of Interdisciplinary Institute for Societal Computing (I2SC)
Ingmar Weber is a German computer scientist renowned for his interdisciplinary research at the intersection of artificial intelligence, computational social science, and societal computing, where he applies statistical methods to non-traditional data sources such as social media platforms to analyze population behaviors and societal trends.
Since 2022, Weber has held the Alexander von Humboldt Professorship for Artificial Intelligence and the Chair for Societal Computing at Saarland University, following a PhD in computer science from the same institution in 2007, postdoctoral work at EPFL and Yahoo Research, and leadership as Research Director for Social Computing at the Qatar Computing Research Institute from 2017 to 2022. His key contributions include developing algorithms to model migration patterns with greater accuracy than traditional statistics, distinguishing hate speech from provocative rhetoric on platforms like Twitter, and advancing Bayesian models to mitigate biases in “big social data” for reliable insights into political polarization and other global challenges. Notable achievements encompass the 2022 Alexander von Humboldt Professorship award, a best paper at the AAAI International Conference on Web and Social Media in 2016, and recognition as a Distinguished Member of the ACM, underscoring his role in bridging computing with social sciences for evidence-based policy and “AI for social good” initiatives.
