Researcher and tolerance advocate for Arab-Jewish dialogue in the Middle East

Huda Raphael Sievers Researcher, Dialogue Promoter, and Advocate for Arab-Jewish Relations Huda Michelle Raphael Sievers is a distinguished researcher and advocate for Arab-Jewish dialogue and tolerance in the Middle East. Born and raised in Iraq, Huda excelled academically, gaining admission to medical school after achieving outstanding high school results. Having personally experienced the effects of conflict, she was forced to leave her studies one year short of earning her MD degree due to the outbreak of war. After relocating to the United States, Huda channeled her passion for helping others into medical research. She made significant contributions to clinical research teams at Cedars-Sinai Hospital, the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), Bristol Myers Squibb, and Novartis. Her research spanned several fields, including Obstetrics, Oncology, and Neurology. In 2004, Huda’s commitment to making a difference brought her back to the Middle East, where she worked with homeless children in Iraq. Following her marriage to a senior U.S. diplomat, she joined her husband on postings across the Middle East and North Africa, including Algeria, Egypt, Israel, and Oman. As a native of the region fluent in its languages and cultures, Huda spearheaded events to promote education, dialogue, and conflict resolution between local communities and Western expatriates. A passionate supporter of the arts, Huda showcased indigenous talent in her host countries, organizing performances and exhibitions to celebrate local art and music. Huda also maintained her strong connection to medicine, working closely with professionals in each host country. During her time in Oman, she initiated a collaborative program with the U.S. Embassy to bring American medical experts to local conferences. These experts shared their knowledge on topics such as obesity and women’s and children’s health. This initiative strengthened U.S.-Oman relations and was recognized by the U.S. Department of State. Growing up near the farmlands of Basrah fostered Huda’s interest in sustainable solutions for water and agriculture. After her husband’s retirement as U.S. Ambassador to Oman, she continues her efforts to bring sustainable technologies to the Gulf region. As a member of Iraq’s remaining Jewish community, Huda witnessed the coexistence of Jewish, Muslim, Christian, and Sabian communities. Her deep curiosity about the region’s Jewish heritage inspired her to research and promote awareness of its centuries-old legacy of tolerance and peaceful coexistence. Huda’s knowledge of four languages has allowed her to connect deeply with diverse cultures. She enjoys writing, reading, singing, and storytelling, sharing her rich cultural heritage and personal experiences to inspire others.
