
Elder David A. Bednar
Member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
Elder David A. Bednar has been engaged in full-time Church service since his call to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles in 2004 at age 52. This governing body under the Church President oversees the Church’s 17 million members in more than 200 nations and territories. As one of the Twelve Apostles, his current responsibilities include supervising Church spiritual and humanitarian activities in the Middle East and North Africa, Central Europe, and the western United States and Canada. He often meets with ambassadors, senior government officials, and heads of state. He is based at Church headquarters in Salt Lake City, Utah. Elder Bednar earned a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree from Brigham Young University. He also received a doctoral degree in organizational behavior from Purdue University. He was a professor of business management at Texas Tech University and at the University of Arkansas from 1980 to 1997. He served as the president of Brigham Young University–Idaho from 1997 to 2004. He directed an innovative transition of the school from the largest private junior college in the United States to a four-year university with current on-campus and online enrollment of more than 40,000 students. Elder Bednar married Susan Kae Robinson in 1975, and they are the parents of three sons.
