
Hanan Alsanah

Adv. Hanan Alsanah is a Bedouin feminist, human rights lawyer, social activist, and peacebuilder from Be’er Sheva, Israel. With over 20 years of experience, she combines legal advocacy with grassroots initiatives and community leadership to advance gender equality and empower women. She is Co-Executive Director of Itach-Maaki –Women Lawyers for Social Justice and leads the 5050 initiatives in Arab society. Hanan has worked with thousands of Bedouin women and developed a pioneering model for advancing women’s rights within traditional and conservative communities, through education, economic empowerment, and communication programs. In 2005, she became the first Bedouin woman to represent her community before the UN CEDAW Committee. Hanan promotes women’s leadership and Jewish-Arab partnership as drivers of social change, including through Track 2 diplomacy and the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1325. She also serves on the Steering Committee of WCC – Women Champions for Change, advancing regional collaboration. Following October 7th, she co-founded Jewish-Arab Emergency Relief Centers in the Negev. Her inspiring story is featured in the 2024 documentary” Her War – Hanan” Hanan holds a master’s degree in law and is currently a thesis-track master’s student and PhD candidate at the Buchmann Faculty of Law, Tel Aviv University. Her doctoral research examines the legal, political, and socio-cultural barriers faced by Bedouin women without family support in realizing their right to housing in the city of Rahat.
